The JAMS Project Office manages the 70-mm Hydra Rocket (formerly 2.75-inch Rocket), HELLFIRE Missile, Viper Strike Munition, Griffin Missile, the Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM), and their associated test and support equipment. The 70-mm Hydra Rocket is a free-flight rocket with multiple warhead configurations that has become the standard, ground-attack rocket since its first use in the Korean War. It is a conventional ammunition item used by all U.S. Services and many countries. According to Army Aviation Commanders, Hydra is the primary insurgent killer for Army helicopters. Hydra Rockets and HELLFIRE Missiles are the primary armament for the U.S. Army’s AH-64 Apache, OH-58D Kiowa Warrior, the U.S. Marine Corps’ AH-1W Super Cobra, and the U.S. Navy’s UH-60 Blackhawk.
The combat-proven HELLFIRE II Missile is the primary air-to-ground precision weapon for rotary wing and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) for all U.S. services as well as 16 other nations. Over 15,000 missiles have been fired since the beginning of overseas contingency operations on 9/11. HELLFIRE is the only missile for multi-mission, multi-target capability and precision-strike lethality on today’s joint rotary wing platforms. The AGM-114R multi-purpose HELLFIRE II Missile consolidates the capabilities of all previous HELLFIRE II Semi-Active Laser (SAL) variants into a single missile that defeats a broad range of targets from air defense systems to enemy combatants in the open. The Longbow HELLFIRE is a millimeter wave radar-aided inertial guidance missile that provides a fire-and-forget capability to engage targets both day and night, in adverse weather and with battlefield obscurants present.
The Joint-Air-to-Ground (JAGM) system will provide an air-to-surface, precision, standoff strike capability from the host platform. The JAGM system will enable war-fighters to attack critical, high value, fixed and moving targets, day or night, in battlefield limited visibility conditions, adverse weather and against countermeasures. The JAGM is an Army led program with joint requirements from the Army, Navy and United States Marine Corps (USMC). The threshold platforms are the U.S. Army’s Apache (AH-64) and the USMC’s Super Cobra (AH-1Z).
The Griffin missile provides precision accuracy through the use of GPS and SAL to give the war fighter advanced, real-time flexibility through selectable options such as fuze settings for Point Detonation, Height-of-Burst and Delay for penetration as well as selectable laser codes. Griffin’s weight (34 lbs) and ease of integration makes it ideal for ground, vehicle or aerial platforms where there is a need for a reliable, lightweight precision missile capable of delivering lethal effects with low collateral damage.Mission
The Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM) provides the capabilities of legacy air-to-ground missiles into a single variant to include precision point targeting, fire-and-forget technology, and increased lethality and range for rotary-wing aircraft and unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The Laser HELLFIRE provides attack helicopter point target precision strike missile capability to defeat armor and selected targets. The Longbow HELLFIRE provides the warfighter with an air-to-ground precision missile system to engage and defeat individual advanced-armor, hard-point targets while increasing aircraft survivability. The 70-mm Hydra Rocket provides air-to-ground suppression, smoke screening, illumination, and direct and indirect fires to defeat area materiel and personnel targets at close and extended ranges. The Viper Strike is an aerial-launched munition, integrated on both manned and unmanned platforms, capable of attacking moving and stationary targets ranging from armored to thin-skinned vehicles and troops in the open, with precision-point targeting and minimized collateral damage. Griffin provides versatility through a reliable, lightweight, multi-effects missile with selectable fuze settings, precise GPS guidance that permits non- line-of-sight employment and semi-active laser (SAL) targeting for pinpoint accuracy and it can be launched from many fixed wing, rotary, vehicle or ground launchers.
